Windows is a computer operating system designed and sold by Microsoft Corporation which can be used on stand alone computers or installed on web servers. The first version of Windows was released in 1985 as a graphical shell for MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) in response to the growing interest by the public and business in graphical user interfaces. Microsoft Windows soon dominated the world’s personal computer market with more than 90% market share which overtook Mac OS which had been released one year prior.
The latest version of Microsoft Windows as of this writing is version 8.1 and it is available not only for personal computers (Windows 8.1) and web servers (Windows Server 2012 R2), but also for mobile devices and embedded devices (Windows Phone 8 and Windows Embedded 8 respectively). Many other operating systems such as Mac OS X, UNIX and it’s many variants are able to emulate Windows so that Windows compatible applications may be run on those platforms as well.
